Crazy Experience by Momina Allawala

In a city often referred to as the city of lights, it is still remarkably difficult for Karachiites to find exciting,
adventurous outlets, especially if the excitement of bombs and target killing is not your cup of tea.
While coffee hangouts and restaurant soirees are fun, sometimes a little something out of the ordinary
goes a long way in rejuvenating oneself.

The Divers Reef Snorkelling Day trips offer just that. A group of 12 of us decided to avail of the
opportunity provided by Divers Reef to go snorkelling. The morning of the trip started with a drive to
Boat Basin to have nashta. The halwa puri and tea we had from the local restaurant, was a perfect wake
me up for the exciting day to follow. After enjoying our breakfast, we set out towards Mubarek Village.
On reaching Mubarek village we climbed on to the boat which was to take us towards Churna Island.
The boat ride itself was wonderful. The cool breeze provided excellent respite from the sweltering heat
of summers and the boat ride gave our group an opportunity to chitchat. We reached our destination
after around twenty minutes. The water near Churna Island was clear blue and looked inviting! We wore
our snorkelling gear provided by Divers Reef and jumped into the water. Even those who did not know
how to swim got into the water with their life jackets.

The water was amazing. The clarity was great for snorkelling and we were soon able to see schools of
fishes of different colours swimming beneath the surface of the water. The shallow coral reefs were
beautiful and we found abundance of marine life around them. The Divers Reef instructors who went
with us were extremely helpful and attentive. They were buzzing around us helping anyone who needed
help with their equipment and explaining how to use the snorkels and equalize the ears under the
water. They also had special underwater cameras to take pictures of the day (I looked straight out of
something from the Avatar in mine!)

After swimming, snorkeling and splashing for a while in the sea we all swam over to the nearby Churna
Island to explore the island. It was a bit of a hike to the top of the Island but it was worth it! The
view from the top of the island was spectacular- the vast sea stretched below us as it glistened in the
afternoon sunlight. We climbed back down towards the cave on the island where we sat down to have
our lunch. The Divers Reef Team had brought with them biryani and drinks to satisfy the hunger and
thirst. After all the snorkeling, swimming and trekking on the island we were ravenous and the food
was happily devoured. We sat on the rocks and laughed and enjoyed our self while relishing our biryani.
Sitting on the rocks, near the open waters, one could not help appreciate the serenity of the moment.
The day was proving to be a perfect day out with friends.

As we headed back to the boat to return back to the city, I could not help but feel happy and content
about the day I had. The Divers Reef Snorkeling trip had been an affordable and fun way to spend a
day off. The trip had provided a much needed respite from the mundane and ordinary. The day had
promised to be exciting and the Divers Reef Snorkeling trip delivered on its promise to provide an
exciting and fun experience.

hey can we go to the deep in the sea like deep sea diving or u guys just offer snorkeling? and for deep sea diving is it must to know swimming?

    • admin09-28-12

Well, for skin diving professionally you need to learn swimming and that does’nt mean floating. It means you should know how to control yourself properly in water. We have innovative ways for taking people underwater who don’t know swimming. 85% of our customers are non-swimmers. Going Deep into the sea requires high level training and experience. You need to accomplish a specific number of dives in order to dive deep without assistance.

I always had a dream of going down in the deep sea and watch the nature beneath the sea. I had seen the sea from the top but believe me there is an entire new world below. Tired of the noise of big cities when you wear your snorkels you don’t hear anything except the sound of breathing.

As you move around, you explore a clean world, unpolluted and colourful. You would find different kind of beautiful rocks on the sea bed with little fish moving around you to welcome you to their world.

The interesting part is that people who had never even entered a pond, jumped inside the sea and remained there for hours. Yes at first they wouldn’t even know how to balance themselves in the water, but within no time you would find them moving independently. My 12 year old daughter proved to be the best snorkeler among us. We loved watching her float quietly over the sea without any fear or hesitation. I think this was the best outing she has ever had.

I had never dreamed of my wife entering a deep pool, but once she jumped in the sea then there was nothing that could stop her from the enjoyment.

I was very much impressed by the arrangements. Air conditioned coaches were arranged for transportation. A good Halwa Puri Nashta was served in the morning followed by Biryani for lunch. Chilled Mineral Water and Cold drinks were made available. Every individual was made to wear a life jacket ensuring their safety. All the time their team members were roaming around us for guidance and support. One would never feel lost or unattended. They took pictures inside and outside the water of almost everybody with their water resistant cameras.

There was no loose talk on the boat or in the water. Everyone behaved properly and the ladies enjoyed their time.

The team was very cautious about the environment. They would request everybody to avoid polluting the sea and even the land.

I would like to thank the entire team of DRK for making my dream come true.

I would surely love to visit that place again.

    Regars,

    Faysal.

Well it’s a great initiative and something real in the name of “having fun” or we just knew about eating-out in the name of having fun.

Now am planning to convince my family youth for this expedition :D

I am a huge fan of Sky-Diving, I wish someday we could have Sky-Diving also available for us :)

Hey guys, just wondering if there was an uptick in your business after the Bollywood film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, was released? I guess if there was a Katrina-esque lady on your team, your bookings would just sky rocket ;-P Just kidding ..

On a more serious note, this is a great initiative and hopefully, I’ll try getting a few friends/family together for a trip out to Churna – can this experience be booked for late December 2012/early January 2013 or is the water too cold during winter months?

  6. I've sent you an email guys... Do check it and reply..12-18-12

It would be an enormous and outstanding experience INSHA ALLAH …

    • admin05-27-13

  10. Sabeen Jaffer03-21-13

This seems adventurous, but I have some concerns if someone can clear it before a plan something.

    1. I don’t know how to swim? Still you guys will take me under water?
    2. What are the security measures? What will be the route? I hope there is no scene of being mugged by some unknown crocks?
    3. If we want this trip how much time you require arranging the trip? As in a month before or weeks?

    Regards,
    Sabeen
